Setting up a successful website is exponentially easier when starting from the ground up. You should be choosing your hosting, web builder, content, and everything according to optimizing it for SEO while delivering the content and look you want.
Here are the 2 steps to setting your website up for future success:
1. Choose the right hosting provider and domain
In today’s landscape, you have a bunch of cheap web hosting to choose from. Most of which will come with a free year of a .com domain and privacy for that domain. (Trust me, unless you love spam calls, you are going to want the privacy)
But which one is the right one for you?
The fastest you can get for your money. Here is the good article for fast web hosting.
Why do you want it to be fast?
Because speed helps with your user experience thus affecting your SEO/Google Rankings. If your bounce rate increases, Google will label you as a spammy website or not giving what visitors want. Your goal is to get your page load time underneath 3 seconds. I’ve written a full article on how to maximize website speed if you want more information.
In the article, it outlines, the fastest hosting providers for their cost. I’ve personally used Siteground and it has worked wonderfully for myself.
Your domain more has to do with your business in general. Keep in mind that a .com is exponentially more trusted in the United States than any other TLD. Also, keep in mind that keyword stuffing your domain does not help your SEO.
If you want a little more information on how to pick the perfect domain for SEO Neil Patel has a fantastic article.
2. Choose your Web Builder
There are plenty of great free and cheap web builders out there. Weebly, Wix, WordPress, and Webflow just to name a few. But when it comes to out of the box SEO and complete control and customization, the obvious winner is WordPress.
WordPress comes complete with SEO plugins, blog platforms, galleries, sliders, anything that you need to get your website content spot on. It powers over 30% of the web so you know it’s trustworthy. With the amount of themes and plugins available, you are able to create an optimized and lightweight website almost free.
The biggest pain you’ll have is choosing what theme and what plugin because there are so many available!
Basically, anything that says and can prove it’s optimized for speed! Which in turn gives you better SEO.
- SKT Perfect – Commercial WordPress Theme for commercial sites
- Divi by Elegant Themes – if you want a drag and drop builder, it’s truly amazing. It’s what I built my companies website off of.
- Here’s an article of many more (There’s too many to list, but above are two that I’ve used and love)
There is only one need to have plugin, the rest are up to you and what your content revolves around. That’s the Yoast SEO Plugin.
Using the free Yoast SEO Plugin you can truly set your website up for success. You can create content focused around certain keywords, connect your website to Google, Bing, and other search engines. The best part is the no guesswork you have to do with Meta tags, titles, and headers to truly hit that niche you are looking for.
You’re going to want to optimize every part of your website from the ground up to save time and money down the road.
- Choose the right hosting and domain for you
- Make sure it has a fast loading time
- Fits in your budget
- Don’t think too hard about your domain
- Use WordPress as your web builder
- Best out the box SEO
- Premium themes and plugins that can take your website to the next level
These two steps should give you great starting blocks for a website that can climb the Google Ranks and truly have future success. Keep in mind that having a successful website does not happen overnight! It takes time to build up the SEO, brand awareness, and credibility to be successful on the web.
Now I know I’ve mentioned a ton about SEO in this answer. And that’s because it’s critically important to your website’s success. SEO is single-handedly the biggest determinate to a website’s success. I don’t have room to explain it here but check out this article on why SEO is so important.
